No statement in Parliament on arrest of Anees

The government on Tuesday dropped its plan to make a statement in Parliament on the arrest of underworld don Anees Ibrahim Kaksar in Dubai, apparently not to jeopardise efforts to bring him back home.

Minister of State for Home I D Swami was supposed to make the statement, which was dropped from the list of business in the Lok Sabha.

In the Rajya Sabha, Deputy Chairperson Najma Heptullah said the minister would not make the statement.

Meanwhile, Central Bureau of Investigation Director P C Sharma said, "Our officials and the Indian ambassador [in the United Arab Emirates] are in constant touch with officials in Dubai to try and work out the ways by which Anees can be brought to India.

"Anees was arrested in Dubai on December 3 and we were informed soon, after which we rushed our official to the port-city."

Sharma said that the "criminal digest" of Anees had been handed over to the Dubai police.

Expressing confidence that Anees would be handed over, Sharma said the "UAE authorities have been cooperating with India, as is evident in the swift handing over of Aftab Ansari", the main accused in the shootout case at the American Centre in Kolkata earlier this year.

Some newspapers published from Dubai reported that Anees had been arrested for "suspected criminal violation or offences in Dubai".

Gulf News quoted a source in the Dubai police as saying that Anees was arrested on his arrival from Saudi Arabia, where he had gone to perform Umrah.
