In renewed violence, suspected Naxalites of the outlawed People's War group on Friday night shot dead a Telugu Desam Party block (mandal praja parishad) president in Visakhapatnam district.
A state police spokesman told rediff.com on Friday night that a group of four armed persons arrived at the residence of Anantagiri block president Bojja Raja Rao around 2030 hours IST.
They shot at Rao, who was taking a bath outside his house, at point blank range. The incident occurred in Chintapalli taluka, which is a hotbed of Naxalites.
This is the second murder of a TDP functionary in the last two days.
Earlier, late on Wednesday night, suspected PW group Naxalites had killed Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) member Mesram Jangu at Indervelli village in Adilabad district.
The four assailants waited for him in the residence of Indervelli TDP block president Durva Nago Bai, a surrendered extremist. They opened fire as soon as Jangu (35) arrived killing him on the spot.
Jangu was a popular tribal leader who refused security cover despite repeated threats to his life from Naxalites.
Jangu's murder is attributed to his role in the formation of the Adivasi Maha Sabha, a forum of 27 tribal outfits, which had assumed the role of a guardian of tribal rights. This forum openly accused the Naxalites of causing hardships to them.
"The killing of a tribal representative only exposes the unsympathetic and cruel attitude of the Naxalites towards the weaker sections of society," Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said while condemning the incident.
