Militants gun down 12 villagers in Rajouri, Doda

Suspected militants gunned down a dozen villagers in Rajouri and Doda districts of Jammu and Kashmir late on Friday night.

Police said gunmen forced their entry into Dhudhassan, a tribal village 185 km from Jammu in Rajouri district, and opened indiscriminate fire. "Eight persons died on the spot...the gunmen escaped under the cover of darkness," a senior police official said.

The news about the killing reached Rajouri town early on Saturday morning. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the massacre.

Another report from village Hayatpora near Manjakote in Rajouri district said militants shot two villagers early on Saturday morning.

Two more villagers were gunned down in Doda district.

Rajouri district goes to polls on September 16, while polls in Doda will be held in the last phase of election in Jammu and Kashmir.

Centre is rushing additional troops to the state for deployment during the polls. Paramilitary troops have started arriving in the Valley.
