Seven JeM militants gunned down in Poonch sector

Seven top Jaish-e-Mohammad militants were gunned down by the army foiling another infiltration bid by Pakistani militants near the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, a senior army officer said on Thursday.

"We have killed seven JeM militants at Mendhar in the Poonch sector after a 20-hour-long encounter, which ended on Thursday afternoon and recovered a large quantity of weapons. This clearly shows that infiltration has not been stopped by the Pakistan army," General Officer Commanding of 25 Infantry Division Major Gen Randhir Singh said.

The Pakistan army launched these militants on Wednesday night from the Boray Goian area near the LoC into Mendhar with full support and guidance, he said. However, alert troops of the Krishnagati brigade eliminated them after trapping them in a gully and recovered a huge quantity of arms and ammunition, Maj Gen Singh, who looks after Poonch sector, told reporters in Krishnagati (Poonch).

This is the second infiltration bid in August in the Mendhar belt. Earlier on August 2, three infiltrators were killed there, Singh said.

He also spoke about hundreds of militants kept ready by the Pakistani army to be launched into Jammu and Kashmir. "There are about 1000 to 1500 militants staying in different militant camps-cum-launching pads run by the Pakistan army to be pushed into Poonch and Rajouri districts," he said.
