Fidayeen attack on Rashtriya Rifles bunker kills soldier

Heavily armed fidayeens attacked a bunker of the Rashtriya Rifles in the main Handwara town in the north Kashmir district of Baramulla early on Tuesday.

The police said two fidayeens hurled grenades and fired from automatic weapons on the bunker, killing one soldier and seriously injuring two.

The soldiers also retaliated.

Reinforcements were rushed to the spot and one fidayeen identified as Abu Khalid was killed on the spot, while the other, Abu Sheera, died after receiving serious injuries.

Troops later encircled the town and mounted searches.

Meanwhile, militants gunned down a member of the elite special operations group the of state police involved in counterinsurgency operations in Kashmir at Magam Budgam, while a special police officer was serious wounded.

Police sources said the SPO identified as Ghulam Rasool was immediately rushed to hospital in serious condition.

The two SOG members were busy shopping in the main Magam market when the militants opened fire on them from a close range. Constable Nayeem Ahmad of the SOG succumbed to his injuries on the spot.

Police and paramilitary later searched the area.
