One convicted, 18 acquitted in Gulshan Kumar murder case

Merchant was convicted of killing Kumar in Jeet Nagar in suburban Juhu (in Mumbai) on August 12, 1997 and later robbing a taxi to escape from the scene of crime.

He had allegedly pulled out the taxi driver out of the vehicle and fled.

Merchant was convicted under Section 302 IPC (murder), Section 307 IPC (attempt to murder), Section 392 (robbery) and Section 397 IPC (robbery with an intention to cause death).

The sentence will be announced on Friday.

Additional Sessions Judge M L Tahiliyani, however, acquitted 18 other accused, including Tips cassettes owner Ramesh Taurani, for want of evidence.

Those who were released are Abdul Rashid Daud Merchant (an alleged assassin), Fatima Daud Merchant, Javed Kalia, Rafiq Ansari, Rafiq Falke, Imtiaz Merchant, Adil Khan, Aftab Alam Ershad Khan, Jaffer Sharif, Faiyaz Ahmed Chougale, Feroz Khan, Wasim alias Babuji, Abdul Mohammed Khan, Sabir Ali Mazhar Hussain, Abdul Kavi Mohammed Idris Shaikh and Mohammed Azam Abdul Kavi Shaikh.

Accused-turned-approver Mohammed Ali Shaikh was also released as the prosecution failed to prove the conspiracy theory, which was based on Shaikh's statement.
