Orissa court adjourns Staines murder trial

Giridhar Gopal in Bhubaneswar

The trial in the murder case of Australian missionary Graham Stuart Staines and his two minor sons Philip and Timothy was adjourned in the court of the district and sessions judge of Khurda, Mahendranath Patnaik, as the defence counsels were absent on Monday.

A group of fanatics, allegedly led by Dara Singh, had torched Staines and his sons in Monoharpur, Keonjhar district, on January 22, 1999.

The trial began in March 2001 after the Central Bureau of Investigation chargesheeted more then a dozen persons, including Dara Singh.

There were several occasions when either the defence counsels remained absent or the prosecution failed to produce witness on the scheduled date.

The court posted the next date of trial to April 15.
