J&K: POTA accused gets bail

In a significant development, a special judge in Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) granted conditional bail to a person being held under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) while rejecting the police version about his involvement in a Rs four million hawala deal.

The court held that the case diary revealed that one of the accused Zahoor Ahmed Shah was not directly involved with the alleged offence and that he was a bonafide taxi driver. It observed that Shah's role was restricted to his vehicle being hired by the main accused Abdul Rashid Lone from Sopore to Srinagar.

"As such, the bail application at hand is allowed conditionally," the court in its order, issued on Tuesday, said.

It directed the Srinagar central jail authorities to release Shah on a personal bond of Rs 25,000.

Shah was arrested along with Lone early this year while travelling from Sopore to Srinagar after police claimed to have recovered of 80 packets of Rs 500 denomination currency from the taxi.

Meanwhile, Haji Abdul Ahad Bhat, who was granted bail on April one by a designated court after a two-month detention in a POTA-related case for harbouring terrorists, was re-arrested for the same offence under the Public Safety Act within 24 hours, official sources said.
