President gives assent to anti-terrorism Bill

The controversial Prevention of Terrorism Bill, 2002, passed by a joint sitting of Parliament last week, has received Presidential assent and has come into force with immediate effect.

President K R Narayanan signed the Bill, which has been notified as Act no. 17 of the year, an official release said in Delhi on Tuesday.

The President has also given his assent to the Inter-State Water Disputes (Amendment) Bill, 2002, the Institute of Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2002 and the Passport (Amendment) Bill, 2002.

POTA seeks to deal with heinous crimes like subversion, insurgency and terrorism. It replaces the ordinance first promulgated in October last year and re-promulgated in December.

The law provides for continuity of action taken under the ordinance.

It is the third law passed in a joint sitting of Parliament in the last 52 years.
