3 killed, 3 injured in explosion at Eluru railway station in AP

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Three persons were killed and three others injured in a powerful explosion at Eluru railway station near the coastal city of Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh late on Tuesday night.

According to state police officials, the incident occurred on platform one.

Eluru is about 340 kms east of Hyderabad.

The blast occurred when the Howrah-bound Falaknuma Express was entering the station at around 2240 hours (IST).

Police, quoting eyewitnesses, said that three youths, in the age group of 18 to 20 years, were walking briskly on the platform.

Two of them were carrying bags and tiffin boxes while the third was speaking into his cell phone.

The first explosion occurred when the tiffin box slipped out of the hands of one of them. Under the impact, the tiffin in the hands of the other person also exploded.

The three youths were blown up into pieces while three other passers-by on the platform sustained severe injuries.

Police are yet to establish the identity of the dead persons.

The injured have been identified as Undrajavaram G Satyanarayana, computer engineer Ramesh and a passenger M Rambabu. They were admitted to the Eluru government hospital.

The police seized two 9-mm pistols and a cell phone from the scene of the explosion.

South Central Railway and police officials, besides Major Industries Minister K Vidyadhar Rao and West Godavari District Collector Satish Chandra rushed to Eluru railway station.

The police suspect the hand of either Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence or the outlawed People's War Group to be behind the incident.
