NHRC seeks details of anti-terrorism ordinance from Centre

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), which has been opposing new legislation on terrorism, has asked the Centre for a copy of the controversial Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance (POTO).

"Though the Commission has been trying to get a copy of the POTO text, it has neither received one nor has the government referred it to the NHRC."

President K R Narayanan promulgated the ordinance on Wednesday.

The Commission, which had opposed the Prevention of Terrorism (PoT) legislation earlier and criticised the government for bringing in a new legislation, has been maintaining that there were enough anti-terrorism laws in the country and new laws could lead to human rights violation.

"What we need is the strict implementation of the existing anti-terrorism laws in the country and not the new legislation," Verma said adding "The Commission stand has not changed either and there was no reason to modify the same."

The Union Cabinet had approved on October 16 promulgation of an ordinance to combat terrorism in place of the scrapped Terrorism And Disruptive Activities Prevention Act (TADA) making non-disclosure of information relating to a terrorist act an offence.
