Over 50 feared dead in Bangladesh
ship capsize

Three bodies were recovered on Friday, as rescue workers salvaged the passenger ferry, which capsized in a river in southern Bangladesh on Thursday, but over 50 were still missing and feared dead.

The bodies, one man and two women, were found in the hull of the salvaged vessel, the Ekushey Television reported on Friday night.

The ship, which capsized on Thursday, was estimated to have been carrying over 100 passengers, mostly women, children and elderly people. Many swam to safety.

The launch capsized in the Tetulia river in the south of the country, some 30 km from the coastal town of Bhola.

With this, the total number of bodies retrieved rose to five, the report said.

State-owned BSS news agency quoted official sources as saying that the ship, M L Jahangir, with a passenger capacity of 80, sank after colliding with another launch, MV Coco-2.

The government had constituted a three-member inquiry committee to investigate the cause of accident. The panel would submit its report in a week.
