Political stability has returned to India: Vajpayee

V S Chandrasekhar in Washington

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has said that after a period of instability the country has now come to enjoy political stability, and questions about its longevity were no longer being raised.

"The picture of India is changing and it was in the race for development among the comity of nations," he said in his address to the Non Resident Indian community at a reception hosted by the Indian Ambassador to the United States Lalit Mansingh.

At his vintage best and speaking in Hindi punctuated by humourous remarks, Vajpayee said now the parties have realised that there was no use toppling him.

"Being the prime minister of India for three years is a great task. Anybody who came to India used to ask me how long the government will last. Then the situation was also unstable. But not now. Now people (parties) feel if you remove him (Vajpayee) then he will come back to power," he said.

Vajpayee said, "The picture of India is changing in the way the world is looking at us. The purchasing power of the people has gone up and India is seen as a big market now."

Vajpayee said India's relationship with the US has been on the upswing and despite the change in administration the good ties were continuing, keeping in mind the national interests on both the sides.
