One killed in AP Naxalite attack

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

One person was killed and eight others, including three policemen, were injured when the outlawed People's War Group triggered a landmine blast and exploded claymore mines in the Adilabad district of Andhra Pradesh on Thursday morning.

Confirming the incident, the Special Inspector-General of Police (Intelligence), Anurag Sharma, told rediff.com that the incidents occurred at Jhodeghat and Patnapur in the tribal tract of Kerameri, about 300 km north of Hyderabad.

He said local administrative officers were organising a durbar at Jhodeghat at a jatra (annual fete) to commemorate the 'martyrdom' of a prominent tribal leader, Komaram Bheem, who had died fighting against the erstwhile nizams of Hyderabad.

They were proceeding to the jatra for participating in the durbar to sort out the problems of the tribals.

At around 9.20 am (IST), when an advance party of the police was proceeding in a jeep to Golanguda, the Naxalites exploded claymore mines in which three policemen -- a head constable and two constables -- were injured.

Subsequently, expecting that police reinforcements would be rushed to the village, the Naxalites waited in ambush. When a jeep passed by Patnapur village, they exploded a landmine, killing the driver and injuring five other occupants -- three agricultural department officials and two others. Later, the injured persons were rushed to hospital for treatment.

Senior police officials of Adilabad district rushed to the spot for investigations.
