The army and Special Operations Group Wednesday afternoon laid a cordon around a mosque at Kharwara village in southern Pulwama district in Jammu and Kashmir, where three militants were holed up, following a fierce gun-battle during a search operation.
Police said troops mounted searches in the area on Wednesday morning, during which they came under heavy fire from the militants. A solider and a counter-insurgent died on the spot.
Three militants later entered a mosque and members of the SOG and army laid a cordon around it.
Sources said that an exchange of fire was on at 14:30 hours (IST).
At 16:00 hours, the exchange of fire ended, with army officials asking the terrorists to surrender.
A PTI report said that two persons, a special police officer and a jawan, were killed.
The militants hiding in the mosque opened fire when the search party reached there, killing Abdul Rashid alias Nasir.
