New alliance formed in Manipur

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party member R K Dorendra Singh was on Tuesday elected leader of the newly-formed Progressive Democratic Alliance (PDA) ahead of a possible staking of claim by the group to form a government.

BJP - 26 MLAs, Manipur State Congress Party (Chaoba) - 10, Nationalist Congress Party - two, Federal Party of Manipur - two and Janata Dal (Loken) - one formed the PDA during a meeting of representatives of the five parties, BJP MLA Samuel Jendai said in Imphal.

Jendai said the PDA was likely to stake claim to form a BJP-led ministry following the fall of the Samata-led People's Front ministry on Monday.

He said a final decision on whether to stake claim or not to form government was yet to be taken and this would be decided only after getting a directive from the BJP central leadership.
