Date with BryanDate with Bryan

Going to a concert is like going to war. You have to be thoroughly prepared. These are a few lessons I learnt on my first-ever concert, Bryan Adams Live!

You got to wear the right clothes: If only you could see the kind of outfits worn by the amchi Mumbai types! Clones of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Backstreet Boys and Limp Bizkit were all over the place. I pity all those females who came in skimpy backless outfits. Their exercise was futile, because when Bryan Adams is around no one, not even a Playboy centrespread gets any attention.

As for me, I had dreamt of dancing with the rock icon onstage -- that Ms Simran Thadani stole the honour is another thing. Blinded by that belief I had picked up a Summer of '69 T-shirt at a super mall honouring Adams's biggest hit single to date. A simple tee and jeans! What else does one need in life, I thought. And oh yeah, loads of silver bangles; even if he didn't see me, he just... just... might see my hands waving!

You got to be strong: Physically as well as mentally. I refused to do any sort of work one week prior to the concert. Why? I was saving my energy. But to my horror, all that stamina drained off by the time I managed to reach the NSE ground.

An aside, 'ground' is an insult to that venue. What it actually is, is a muddy, barren, pebble-infested area fit for a cemetery.

My middle-class sentiments got a jolt when I heard youngsters mouthing the choicest of abuses while a cover band, Aqua Flow, performed. If you thought love was the most used four-letter word, think again.

You got to have supplies: First, water if you want to survive. There was just one measly stall. In no time everything was over. Knots developed in my stomach, as I looked at every discarded bottle in the vain hope that it might have a few gulps left.

Then, blatantly ignore meaningless restrictions like 'Cell phones not allowed'. Nobody even bothered to check what you were carrying. The kind of security that was there, one could have carried in an AK-47!

You got to be focussed: To lose yourself in the dizzying crowds is the easiest thing. I had gone to the concert with my brother, his friends and my best friend. In our haste to get as close as possible to the stage, my friend and I lost the rest of our gang twice. So please, hold on to your mates tight...

You got to be determined: As fate would have it, we spent half the time searching for our companions outside. Finally we decided there was no point in wandering around. Back to grooving, we thought. But you think getting a crowd of 50,000 part is simple? Obviously we couldn't go in the proper way and had to manage for some time atop a railing behind the stage.

You got to love Bryan Adams: I was slightly disappointed to hear my favourite singer, though. He wasn't really in form. He went off key many times. But considering he is 40-plus he's still going strong.

The key to enjoying a concert is that you really got to love the singer -- in this case, Bryan Adams. I had waited seven years for this day. Although it wasn't exactly what I had dreamt of, it was a night to remember.
