HC notice to Rao in JMM
case against three MPs

The Delhi High Court Friday issued a notice to former prime minister P V Narasimha Rao on a petition filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation seeking release of non-exhibited documents filed in the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) bribery case.

On October 11 last year, additional sessions judge Ajit Bharihoke had directed the CBI to register cases against three JMM members of Parliament who allegedly took bribes to save the Narasimha Rao government during a vote of no-confidence on July 28, 1993.

The CBI was directed to register cases against Suraj Mandal, Simon Marandi and Shibu Soren under the Prevention of Corruption Act for having accumulated assets worth Rs 16.2 million which were disproportionate to their known incomes.

Rao was convicted and sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment. However, on October 24 he challenged the trial court's order and filed an appeal in the high court.

CBI counsel A K Dutt said the investigating agency needed certain non-exhibited documents to proceed the probe against Mandal, Marandi and Soren.

Since the case relates to an appeal filed by Rao, Justice R S Sodhi said the former prime minister must state by May 18 if he had any objection.

Rao and his Union Cabinet colleague Buta Singh were convicted for criminal conspiracy and corruption when the CBI special court held them guilty. The high court has temporarily suspended Rao's and Singh's sentence.
