The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Central Bureau of Investigation to reveal by Saturday conditions needed to be imposed on the Hinduja brothers, if they are allowed to go abroad.
The court also asked for a list of all witnesses and details of developments in the case.
A bench comprising Justices M B Shah and Y K Sabharwal, while hearing three petitions filed by S P Hinduja, G P Hinduja and P P Hinduja challenging a Delhi High Court order refusing them permission to go abroad, asked the CBI to take a practical view and assess the time to be taken to complete the trial. They said the trial may take years.
The brothers said through counsel Kapil Sibal that they were ready to abide by any condition the CBI may impose on them for being allowed to go abroad to attend to their business.
Sibal and senior advocates P P Rao and Rajinder Singh, who appeared for the Hindujas, said that most witnesses cited against the petitioners by the CBI were based abroad and there was no way that the trial could be completed quickly.
However, the CBI, through advocates N Natrajan and P Parameswaran, contended that the high court had directed that the trial be split and completed in six months. He said the agency would try its best to do this.
He said the CBI apprehended that once allowed to leave India, the Hindujas would not return to face trial.
The apex court will sit on Saturday, before it closes for summer holidays, till July 11.
