Curfew lifted from Baramulla old town

Curfew, imposed in Baramulla own on Friday last following killing of a youth and incidents of arson during violent protests against the alleged desecration of a copy of the Quran in Amritsar, was on Tuesday lifted in view of an improvement in the situation, a senior district officer said.

The curfew was lifted from the old town where it was reimposed on Monday in the wake of fresh clashes between police and protestors during a brief relaxation period, Deputy Commissioner of Baramulla Sheikh Hussain told PTI.

He said the situation in the town was fast returning to normal as shops and business establishments had reopened and all modes of transport started plying normally.

While curfew was lifted from the Civil Lines area of Baramulla town on Monday, it was initially relaxed for three hours from 0600 hours (IST) in the old town on Tuesday and subsequently lifted, Hussain said.

He said the relaxation period passed off peacefully which led to the lifting of curfew. However, he said, police and paramilitary forces were deployed in the town as a precautionary measure.

Meanwhile, the students association of Baramulla Degree College demanded immediate release of all those arrested by the police during the last few days in connection with the protests.

Condemning the arrest, a spokesman of the students association in a statement alleged that several youth, mostly students, were arrested by the police.
