J&K security forces on
alert after suicidal attack

The police and other security agencies have been put on high alert in Srinagar city following Monday's suicide attack by militants of the Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Tayiba in which seven people, including four Central Reserve Police Force personnel and two LeT ultras, were killed, official sources said on Tuesday.

The LeT militants sneaked into the CRPF camp in a hotel near Tagore Hall after firing indiscriminately and throwing hand grenades at the guards at the main entrance, a CRPF spokesman said.

The operation, jointly carried out by the CRPF and local police, was joined in by Border Security Force personnel after an intense gun-battle. The security forces laid an outer cordon of the besieged camp to prevent the militants from escaping, he said.

The spokesman said the gun-battle between the intruders and CRPF personnel lasted for nearly six hours, during which a civilian was also killed.

The spokesman dismissed the possibility of a third militant, involved in the suicidal attack on the camp, having escaped after several hours of cross-firing.
