PWG activists blast two police stations in AP

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

The outlawed People's War Group of Naxalites blasted two police stations in the temple town of Srisailam in Kurnool district in the early hours of Thursday.

There were no casualties in the attacks, but the Naxalites took away firearms and wireless sets from the policemen.

Confirming the incident, state police spokesperson Shujath Ali told rediff.com that a group of 20 to 25 members of the PWG raided the two police stations in the temple town, about 200 kms south of Hyderabad, soon after midnight.

The Naxalites first went to the Srisailam town police station and asked the sentries on duty to come out. They took four muskets and four wireless sets before blasting the station.

They then proceeded to the Srisailam temple where they snatched two muskets and one gun from the armed guard posted there before searching the sub-inspector's house and taking away his service revolver.

Subsequently, they commandeered a state road transport corporation bus to the police station at Sunnipenta, 8 kms away.

Finding no weapons in the premises, the ultras took away two wireless sets before blasting the police station besides the jeep of the circle inspector.

They then directed the bus towards Dornakal and slipped into the forests on the way.

The spokesman said that in all, the Naxalites took away six muskets, one SBML gun and a revolver besides two high frequency wireless sets and four Very High Frequency sets from the police.

Additional SP Prabhakar Rao said that senior police officials had rushed to the temple town.

Armed police reinforcements have also been sent to the area for combing operations, he added.
