Final day of mourning in Nepal

K G Suresh in Kathmandu

Nepal on Monday observes the final day of mourning, 10 days after the brutal massacre of King Birendra and other royals, even as the high-level panel probing the incident continues its work after securing a four-day extension from the new monarch.

Members of the royal family and the cabinet will attend the 11th day rituals on the banks of River Bagmati.

Last-minute preparations are afoot at the Phairabsthan temple in Pachalighat in Teku where Brahmins will be fed and other ceremonies conducted to ensure 'eternal peace' for the departed souls.

Elaborate security arrangements have been made across the capital to prevent any untoward incident.

The Palace, meanwhile, has extended the deadline for signing the condolence book kept at the main gates of the royal palace in view of the growing number of locals and foreigners wanting to offer tributes to King Birendra and his family.
