No evidence linking payments by Bofors
to Hindujas: British daily

A leading British daily on Monday claimed that the Swiss authorities had told the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that there was no direct evidence linking illegal payments by the Swedish arms company Bofors to the Swiss Bank accounts belonging to the Hinduja brothers.

The Independent newspaper said in a front page report that the Federal Office for Justice (FOJ) in Switzerland had told CBI that there was no 'direct evidence' linking illegal payments by Bofors to the Swiss bank accounts of the Hindujas, two of who Srichand and Gopichand are British nationals.

Quoting 'documents obtained' by it, the daily said the Swiss have refused a further CBI request to interview officials in connection with the Hinduja bank accounts.

They have told CBI that the alleged events took place too long ago for the interviews to prove a 'valuable means of evidence'.

The newspaper carried two reports on the subject from its correspondent in Delhi along with another journalist, and a separate story on the inside pages.
