Ajmer shopkeepers abandon protest against Musharraf

The shopkeepers in Dargah Bazaar and Dhan Mandi have decided to withdraw their call to wash and clean the marketplace after the visit of President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan on July 16, following an appeal by the district administration, their association announced in Ajmer on Tuesday.

The general secretary of the association, Daulat Longani, announced withdrawal of the protest after the general body discussed the administration's request conveyed by Additional District Magistrate (City) K K Sharma.

The association had earlier decided to wash and clean the Dargah Bazaar and the Dhan Mandi markets, through which Musharraf will pass on his way to the dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti for a ziyarat (pilgrimage).

The shopkeepers had announced the programme earlier in retaliation to a similar act by Muslim hardliners in Lahore after the visit of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to the Minar-e-Pakistan there.
