Eight drowned in Kushinagar boat mishap

At least eight persons, mostly women, were feared drowned in the River Narayani in Kushinagar district of Uttar Pradesh.

Superintendent of Police, Kushinagar, Dawa Serpa told the United News of India on Monday morning that at least 32 persons, mostly women, took a small boat and tried to cross the turbulent river on Sunday near Balgovind village. But because of overloading and the strong current, the boat capsized.

The police have recovered the body of Sursati (50), but the bodies of seven others are yet to be traced. The other women, however, managed to swim ashore.

The search was suspended on Sunday night owing to poor visibility and started again on Monday morning, but without any success.

Those missing are Ramawati (50), Singari (35), Nagvati (14) and Jonhiya (60) from Bhaisaha village; Ramprasad (58), Sumintri (40), and Meena (18), all from Hanumanganj village.

The district magistrate has handed over a cheque for Rs 25,000 to the family of Sursati.

The search for the others is still on, but there is very little hope of their survival, Serpa said.
