Quattrocchi's extradition case
adjourned till February 10

A Kuala Lumpur court Wednesday adjourned till February 10 the hearing on a Central Bureau of Investigation plea for the extradition of controversial Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi to India for alleged involvement in the Rs 14.37 billion Bofors gun deal case.

CBI sources said in New Delhi that the request for an adjournment was made by Quattrocchi citing some other preoccupation of his lawyers.

The court deferred the matter till February 10, but warned Quattrocchi against seeking any further adjournment.

The judge said if the defence lawyer was not present in court on the next date of hearing to argue the case, the court would proceed in his absence.

The judge reminded the Malaysian-settled Italian businessman that there is no stay by the High Court on the proceedings before him.

Quattrocchi's lawyers were to make preliminary submissions on Wednesday against the CBI's plea for the extradition of the prime accused, who is alleged to have brokered the deal between the AB Bofors firm (which sold the 155 mm howitzer guns) and the Indian government during the regime of the late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1986.

The court also extended Quattrocchi's bail till the next date of hearing.
