Hurriyat asks Advani to soften stand

All Party Hurriyat Conference chairman Abdul Ghani Butt has asked Union Home Minister L K Advani to soften his stance on issuing passports to its leaders and allow them to visit Pakistan for resolving the Kashmir problem.

He told BBC (Urdu) on Thursday night that there should be no pressure from the Centre on the selection of the Hurriyat Conference team for Pakistan to hold talks with the leaders of militant outfits and the military government.

The delegation had originally planned to leave for Islamabad on January 15, but postponed its programme as most of the team members do not have travel documents.

Butt said the Hurriyat executive could consider a replacement if the member himself opted to stay back citing personal reasons.

On Abdul Ghani Lone's reported 'unwillingness' to go to Pakistan, he said all members were bound by the executive's decision.

Earlier, Butt had said that in case the Centre did not issue passports to all members, the executive would decide whether to cancel the visit or replace members not given travel documents. However, the chairman was confident that the passports would be issued in a week.

He said more than the tripartite talks between India, Pakistan and the Hurriyat, it was important to start a process for negotiations to solve the Kashmir issue.
