India, China do not pose threat to each other: Li Peng

Li Peng, the number two in Chinese hierarchy, Thursday said China and India did not pose any threat to each other and they shared similar views on a multipolar world in which both the neighbours could play their roles.

At a meeting with Lok Sabha Speaker G M C Balayogi, he said during the visit of late Rajiv Gandhi in 1988 to China several important bilateral issues were discussed and agreements reached.

Parliamentary exchanges were important as MPs, representing all sections of the society and with proper understanding, could help resolve various issues amicably, Li, who is Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National Peoples' Congress said.

Stating that so far there had been few Parliamentary exchanges, he suggested that a plan of action for such exchanges be drawn up for the next two years to begin with.

Li said the 21st century was preceded by rapid development in hi-tech areas and China was yet to cope with these developments. Hi-tech was one area where China could learn a lot from India's experience, he said.
