TDP demands all-party
meet to discuss J&K

The Telugu Desam Party, a key ally of the National Democratic Alliance government, has urged Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the issue of extension of ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir.

Voicing the demand after the Telugu Desam Parliamentary Party meeting in Hyderabad on Sunday, TDP leader K Yerran Naidu said: "We will go by whatever decision the government takes, but we feel that the government must convene a meeting of all political parties to discuss the Jammu and Kashmir situation. The government has not discussed the J&K issue with political parties so far. Vajpayeeji should take the initiative to convene a meeting of all parties now."

Addressing the TDPP meeting, TDP chief and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said the ceasefire has not yielded the desired results in the last three months.

"If the government wants to extend the ceasefire, it must take all parties into confidence to explain to them the ground realities in Jammu and Kashmir," he said.

Yerran Naidu said that the TDPP also wanted the NDA government to come out with a transparent policy in regard to disinvestment in the public sector undertakings, including the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant controlled by the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited.
