Bombay blasts accused, Hanif Kadawala, shot dead

Hanif Kadawala, one of the accused in the serial Bombay blasts case, was shot dead in Bandra on Wednesday at 12.30 pm.

Kadawala was shot dead in his office near Copper Chimney restaurant in Bandra, in Bombay's western suburbs, by three men with whom he had a prior appointment. After a brief discussion, he was fired upon with a revolver, the assailants pumping five bullets into him.

Kadawala died on the way to Bhabha hospital, the police said.

Even as the couple of employees in Kadawala's office went into a panic, the three men made good their escape on foot, the police said. None of the neighbours in Raval building, where Kadawala had his office, apparently saw or heard anything amiss when this correspondent checked with them.

Sources believe the shootout to be handiwork of underworld don Chhota Rajan, but the police say they have no theories as yet. Nor do they have any idea of the suspects. Sources close to the family said while Kadawala had an appointment with the three callers, he did not know them beforehand. He was in the market for a new car, and was scheduled to meet with the three in this connection, they said.

Kadawala, along with Samir Hingora and Baba Chauhan, was accused of supplying actor Sunjay Dutt with an AK-56 rifle and other weapons, in the Bombay blasts case, and was currently out on bail.
