Pick up the pen and jot down your resolutions. How would they run this year? Wake up early, exercise, do one good deed every day, read at least two books a month, keep away from chocolates, write more letters, call up friends regularly, party less, quit smoking, pay off debts, shop less... But resolutions are so hard to keep! They are like ice. Firm one moment and melting the next. And their tenses get all mixed up - they start in the future, somehow bypass the present, and slip down into the past. They also have this horrible habit of being repetitive. Look at your resolutions. I bet most of them have been there for as long as you can remember! Then again, how do you go about remembering resolutions? How about sticking notes all over your room, with the resolutions spelt out in bright red? Or try registering with a site that will send you reminders... (Hmm, not a bad idea, that. Is there any such site? While on the topic, how about a resolution not to waste time on the Net?) Or perhaps, create a screensaver that screams: Shed weight, NOW! Coming back to the issue of keeping resolutions, why is it hard to do that? For one, resolutions are like eels. They simply don't let your brain get a good grip on them. Then there are Excuses. How could we ever live without them! The most common of them being, Oh, shucks, I forgot! You always manage to forget your resolutions. And why not? After all, your brain has more important things to remember. And yet, despite all such, we religiously make resolutions every year. Overtly or covertly. Whether we keep them or not. Why? Just to feel lousy later at our inability to stick to anything? Perhaps it is because the flame of hope burns eternal. Besides, resolutions wouldn't actually be resolutions if you achieved them, right? So have you made your list yet? In case you haven't, here's some help for you, from a few famed ones:
"One resolution I have made, and try always to keep, is this: 'To rise above little things.'"
"Good resolutions are simply checks that men draw on a bank where they have no account."
"Resolve to be thyself: and know that he who finds himself, loses his misery"
"Let us resolve to be masters, not the victims, of our history, controlling our own destiny without giving way to blind suspicions and emotions."
Well, I have kept my list very short. Here it is:
Dream more.
Happy 2002!
