Congress MLA shot dead in Andhra Pradesh

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Congress legislator Dheeravath Raghya Naik was shot dead at Maddimadugula village in Mahbubnagar district of Andhra Pradesh on Saturday afternoon.

State police spokesman Shujath Ali said that a group of unidentified assailants, suspected to be Naxalites belonging to the outlawed People's War Group, shot dead Raghya Naik when he went to attend a jatra (local fair) at the village.

The assailants first snatched away the gun from the legislator's gunman and shot Raghya Naik dead.

Further details on the incident were awaited.

Raghya Naik was elected from Devarakonda (scheduled tribe-reserved) constituency in Nalgonda district in the September 1999 elections. He was a first-time legislator.
