Envoy's recall first step against Pak: Advani

India on Saturday made it clear that the withdrawal of the envoy in Islamabad was the first of the diplomatic steps it intends to take against Pakistan, even as Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf called the Indian decision 'very arrogant'.

Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani said it was the first step and the policy spelt out by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in Parliament would be implemented 'step by step'.

Advani said he had information that the US and the UK may have issued some demarche to Pakistan on the need for taking action terrorist outfits.

Earlier, External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh said in Kabul that the decision to recall the Indian envoy was only a 'signal' to Pakistan so that it recognised the 'enormity of the situation'.

However, he parried a question when asked whether India was considering a military option to deal with the situation.

Asked what next, he said, "Our requirements have been spelt out in the demarche made out to Pakistan on December 14."
