Kashmiri separatist leaders express dismay at envoy's recall

Mukhtar Ahmed in Srinagar

Kashmiri separatist leaders on Friday expressed dismay over New Delhi's decision to recall the Indian high commissioner from Islamabad.

"It is a hasty decision," senior Kashmiri separatist leader and president of the Democratic Freedom Party Shabir said.

He said a war between the two countries would lead to destruction, as both are nuclear powers.

"I was expecting the two heads of state to meet in Kathmandu to diffuse the tension," Shabir added.

"It is an unfortunate decision which is bound to create more tension," Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front president Mohammad Yasin Malik said.

"I think there will be no war between the two countries. The international community is playing a constructive role," he said.

"Friday's development is the saddest news for me," leader of Jamaat Islami Syed Ali Shah Geelani said.

Geelani, who is also the executive member of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference said, "When we (APHC) said that the Kashmir issue has the potential to trigger a nuclear conflict in the sub-continent we were ridiculed."

"Now the present escalating tension has generated the same fears in the minds of those who dismissed our apprehensions as joke and gimmick," he said.
