US Congressman Lantos welcomes action against LeT

US Congressman Tom Lantos has welcomed President George W Bush's action of freezing the assets of terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Tayiba and called for placing both the LeT and Jaish-e-Mohammed on the State Department's Foreign Terrorist Organisations list.

"I understand that the process is underway," said Lantos, a ranking Democrat on the House International Relations Committee.

"I commend the president for freezing the assets of the LeT. It has been perpetrating terrorist attacks against India for the past five years and has targeted military and civilian targets in India. Today's action, and the earlier freezing of assets of Jaish-e-Mohammed, another Kashmiri terrorist organisation, demonstrate America's commitment to combat terrorism in every corner of the globe."

Lantos called on Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf to ease all support to terrorist organisations operating in Kashmir and to take decisive action against those responsible for the October 1 and December 13 attacks in India.

"Pakistan, where the LeT and JeM are based, must also take action to suppress these terrorist organisations. Pakistan has been a strong ally in the fight against terrorism in Afghanistan, and we commend President Musharraf for his staunch support in our global counter-terrorism campaign," he said.
