PM promises firm reply to terrorist strike

India will reply to the "barbaric" terrorist attack on Parliament with firmness and will counter all manifestations of terrorism, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee said on Friday.

"We have been resolutely countering every new manifestation of terrorism in our country. We shall repulse this one equally firmly," the prime minister said while inaugurating the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Union Public Service Commission in New Delhi.

Thursday's terrorist attack on Parliament was "an attack on the highest institution of the largest democracy in the world...this was as much an arrogant challenge to democracy worldwide," he said.

The attack was "unprecedented not only in the history of India, but also in the annals of democracy in the world," he said.

He asked the people to rededicate themselves to the task of strengthening every institution of governance to fight the global menace of terrorism.
