Security tight in New Delhi, Parliament sanitised

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The security around the Parliament complex and other important buildings in New Delhi, including the Rashtrapati Bhavan, North Block, South Block, the prime minister and home minister's residences, and the leader of opposition Sonia Gandhi's house has been tightened.

Throughout Thursday night, the Delhi police stopped vehicles in the city and carried out searches.

Security has also been tightened around the Red Fort -- which was attacked by terrorists in December last year. A high alert has been sounded at the Indira Gandhi International Airport and the inter-state bus terminus.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan visited the Parliament complex in the morning. He later told Star TV that he was satisfied with the security arrangements and added that the Parliament session would begin at the scheduled time.

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani would brief the members of Parliament on Thursday's attack when the Houses reconvene.
