Chandrababu condemns terrorist attack on Parliament, underscores need for POTO

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday strongly condemned the terrorist attack on Parliament House in New Delhi and stressed on the need for a law like the Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance (POTO) to deal with terrorists.

Terming the incident as a very unfortunate one, he said the country has to face the challenge of terrorism and there was a need to fight it out.

The central government should to analyse the shortcomings, which led to the attack, and take all necessary preventive security measures, he said.

The chief minister spoke to Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and Lok Sabha Speaker G MC Balayogi and enquired about the incident. He expressed his heart-felt condolence for the members of the bereaved families of police personnel and civilians killed by the terrorists.

"Our security personnel have done extremely well in tackling the attack," he said.

"The incident is an eye-opener. While 99 per cent of our people are peace-loving, the remaining one per cent want to create chaos in the country. We need a special law to tackle such elements. All the political parties must rise above their differences and support such a legislation," he told newspersons.

Naidu said all political parties should realise the gravity of the problem posed by terrorism and pointed out that it was right time for everybody to unite and condemn such mindless violence.

"We will take all precautions for the ensuing winter session of the state assembly commencing on December 19. We have our own problems (from left-wing extremists)," Naidu said.
