Rajya Sabha unhappy with Jethmalani
advising Hindujas on Bofors

Former law minister Ram Jethmalani created a flutter in the Rajya Sabha on Friday when he said he was advising the Hindujas in the Bofors case, triggering questions whether he could do so after having processed the case as the Union law minister.

"I am advising the Hindujas in the Bofors case. The House must know about it," Jethmalani said suggesting to the government how it should handle the Hindujas' bid for Air India.

Participating in a discussion on the calling attention motion on the divestment policy, he said he was conforming to the rules even while advising the Hindujas.

Jethmalani said there were 20 volumes of record regarding the Bofors case and the divestment minister, while choosing the bidder for Air India, would have to consider the Hindujas before assessing 'who is guilty and who is not'.

He said a court was best suited for the latter task. "It is not the government's job," he said.

Nominated member Fali S Nariman, Suresh A Keshwani (independent) and Nilotpal Basu (CPI-M) said a serious view has to be taken by the House on the issue.

"It is a sad commentary that having served as the Union law minister, he is now advising the Hindujas on the Bofors issue," Basu said.
