Close on the heels of last week's arrest of two agents of Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), the Kanpur police nabbed yet another young man, who confessed to his close nexus with the Hizbul Mujahideen, a militant outfit active in Jammu and Kashmir.
The 26-year-old was identified as Jilani Khan, Kanpur Senior Superintendent of Police Arun Kumar told rediff.com.
An old house belonging to Khan in the ghetto in Chamanganj area was stated to have been used by him as a hideout for Hizbul Mujahideen activists, whose visits to Kanpur had also been substantiated during the course of Khan's interrogation, the district police chief added.
Kumar said, "Khan was directly involved in the Kanpur blasts engineered on the eve of Independence Day last year."
The police recovered some explosives, including a powerful hand-grenade, 400 grams of RDX, and sufficient gadgetry for making remote controlled explosive devices.
"Khan's association with Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) had also been confirmed," he said. "He was found to have been instrumental in setting up of the SIMI office on Kanpur's Nala Road," he added.
Kumar, among the first to be drafted into the specially created Special Task Force (STF) during the Kalyan Singh regime in 1996, was responsible for busting several ISI-supported groups that are active in different parts of the state.
