The Canadian International Development Agency has announced aid of Canadian $200,278 (Rs 6.14 million at Rs. 30.67 to a Canadian dollar) for the victims of the floods in Orissa.
CIDA has asked two organisations, the Canadian Lutheran World Relief and Care Canada, to coordinate the relief effort. The assistance will be spread over a period of three months till October, a CIDA statement on Friday said.
CLWR, through its local partner, Lutheran World Service India, is currently engaged in distributing temporary shelters in the form of plastic sheets, blankets and household utensils for 20,000 families and seeds and fertilizers for 5,000 farm households, who have lost their crops in the districts of Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara and Puri, the statement said.
Lutheran World Service India has assisted in providing relief in Orissa and West Bengal for the past two years. It has been active in the region for 30 years, the statement said.
Care Canada will provide emergency assistance to 40,000 families in the districts of Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara and Puri. This will include the distribution of temporary shelters and household survival kits comprising candles, matchsticks, floor mats, clothes and oral rehydration salts, the release said.
