CDS will be a 4-star officer: Jaswant

The government on Thursday announced that the country's first ever chief of defence staff would be a four star officer drawn from any of the three services and would act as the permanent chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee.

This was stated by Defence Minister Jaswant Singh in a written reply in Rajya Sabha, adding that the creation of the new post would ensure inter se and intra se prioritisation of the equipment-related requirements of the armed forces and also facilitate single point military advice being made available to the government.

Singh said the setting up of the new post had been recommended by a Group of Ministers who had gone into findings of the Kargil review committee. He said the GOM's recommendations had been presented to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and action on it as required would be taken expeditiously.
