Sopore SP survives ambush, 1 cop killed

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

One policeman was killed on the spot while another was seriously injured when militants ambushed the motorcade of the Superintendent of Police of Sopore late on Monday evening. The SP had a miraculous escape.

The ambush on the convoy of Shaukat Malik, a highly experienced police officer, occurred near Haigam on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway.

The SP was returning from Magam where policemen of the Special Operations Group of the state police had fired upon a procession of Shia mourners. Three people were injured in the firing, which led to protests.

According to initial reports, two policemen accompanying the SP died on the spot. Senior police officials confirmed that Malik is safe.

Militants hurled grenades and opened indiscriminate fire on the SP's motorcade when it reached Haigam. The escort vehicle of the SP bore the brunt of the attack.

This is the first attack on a senior security official after Colonel J P Janu was killed and Brigadier Bikram Singh injured by militants at Anantnag in March.

Senior police officials have rushed to the spot.
