Senior Congress leaders call on Rao

Several senior Congress leaders, including CWC members Manmohan Singh and R K Dhawan, on Saturday called on former prime minister and party president P V Narasimha Rao who was convicted on Friday by a special court in the multi-million Jharkhand Mukti Morcha bribery case.

Former Union ministers in the Rao Cabinet Balram Jakhar, R L Bhatia, Satish Sharma, Salman Khursheed, Suresh Pachori, Matang Singh, K C Lenka, Orissa and Assam state unit presidents J B Patnaik and Tarun Gogoi, were among those who visited the former Congress president on Saturday, sources said.

Party spokesman Anand Sharma, Murali Bhandare, P Upendra, Vyalar Ravi, Jaipal Reddy also met Rao and expressed their unhappiness over the developments, the sources said.

On Friday, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, former All India Congress Committee chief Sitaram Kesri, Senior party leader Pranab Mukherjee, party spokesman Ajit Jogi and former Haryana chief minister Bhajan Lal met Rao and are understood to have expressed their distress over the development.

Former prime minister Chandrasekhar, Nationalist Congress Party leader P A Sangma, Janta Party president Subramaniam Swami also called on the former prime minister.
