Rao and Buta Singh can get upto seven years

Former prime minister P V Narasimha Rao and former Union minister Buta Singh can be jailed up to seven years under the Prevention of Corruption Act, senior lawyer R D Rana said in New Delhi Friday.

Talking to reporters after the judgment by special CBI judge Ajit Bharihoke, he said the quantum of sentence will be pronounced on October 11, after the lawyers of Rao, Singh and the CBI complete their arguments.

''If the sentence exceeds more than three years, both the accused will be sent to jail,'' Rana said and added in case of lesser punishment, they will be given interim bail to appeal in the high court.

Both the accused have been found guilty of violation of Section 120 (conspiracy) read with Section 13(1) of the Act.

The confessional statement of former Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader Shailendra Mahato and Singh's admission that he had taken four JMM MPs to the residence of the former prime minister have been taken as the main ground for conviction of both senior Congress leaders.
