Gopal expected to leave in a day or two

Journalist-emissary R R Gopal is expected to leave for the forests in a day or two to meet forest brigand Veerappan and explain the action taken by the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka governments to tackle the hurdles put up by a petition before the Supreme Court.

The petition questions the rationale behind the two governments' decision to release some persons from police custody and withdraw police cases against some others as demanded by the bandit.

The matter would come up for hearing in the Supreme Court on Tuesday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said on Monday.

However, a firm date for Gopal's departure had yet to be decided, he told reporters in Madras.

Earlier, Karnataka Home Minister Mallikarjun Kharge, together with top officials, held a 50-minute discussion with Karunanidhi.

Kharge later told reporters that they had taken stock of the prevailing situation.

Veerappan has been holding Kannada superstar Dr Rajakumar and three others hostage since July 30.
