CRPF castigated in Pahalgam massacre incident

A probe committee, inquiring into the August one Pahalgam incident in which 32 people, including 23 Amarnath pilgrims, were killed when security forces clashed with militants has castigated the Central Reserve Police Force for 'excessive firing' to control the situation.

Earlier in the day, the state cabinet had accepted the report of the three-member inquiry committee, headed by Lt General S Mukherjee.

Talking to reporters after the cabinet meeting, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah said a case of murder would be filed against the CRPF officials found guilty by the committee.

Dr Abdullah said four J&K police officers - Superintendent of Police Tilak Raj, Deputy Superintendents of Police Abdul Qayoum and Pritam Singh, and Sub Inspector G M Bhat who have been found guilty of failing to discharge their duty by the committee - have been suspended.

The inquiry committee report is being sent to Delhi so that action is initiated against the CRPF personnel.

Dr Abdullah said the committee has also made suggestions for making the annual Amarnath pilgrimage safer and more comfortable.

He said apart from the Amarnath Shrine Board, the committee has recommended that there should be a committee headed by state chief and principal secretary, and comprising the home secretary, director general (tourism), divisional commissioner (Kashmir and Jammu) as its members to discuss the arrangements for the pilgrimage.
