Sivanandan's departure delayed by Centre

Bombay's Joint Commissioner of Police (crime) D Sivanandan's departure to Bangkok, to expedite deportation of underworld don Rajendra Sadashiv Nikhalje alias Chhota Rajan from Thailand, has been delayed as the Centre is yet to give the necessary clearances, police sources said.

Sivanandan had been last week directed by the Maharashtra government to leave on Monday.

Senior police officials in Bombay said that Sivanandan will leave for Bangkok only after all the formalities are completed.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, who holds the home portfolio, on October 27 had directed Sivanandan to leave for Bangkok on October 30, the sources said.

"In extradition cases, we have to strictly follow international laws and it takes time to get the culprit back," they said.

Sivanandan would join the three-member team of the Bombay police, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Shankar Kamble, who had left on October five to expedite the deportation process.

Sivanandan was earlier in New Delhi to co-ordinate with central agencies efforts to obtain the deportation of Rajan who was seriously injured in an attack by rival gangsters in Bangkok in September.
