Tikait arrested in Muradabad

Bharatiya Kisan Union president Mahendra Singh Tikait was arrested in Muradabad on Wednesday night amid apprehensions he would cause disruption in Haridwar where he planned to hold a rally on Thursday against its inclusion in the new state of Uttaranchal.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Inspector General of Police V K Gupta said that Tikait, who was arrested along with four of his supporters, was sent to the Rampur jail from where he would be possibly released on October 15.

Asked why he was sent to the Rampur jail instead of the local jail, Gupta said it was done to maintain peace.

"As the BKU is very active in Muradabad and nearby areas, we decided to send him to Rampur," he clarified.

Tikait had planned to hold the protest rally jointly with the Haridwar Bachchao Sangharsh Samiti.
